Hidden Heroes Emerging from the Shadows

Research Published Sep 24, 2024

The authors produced new estimates of the number of adults caregiving in the United States today; investigated how those caring for wounded, ill, and injured service members and veterans compare with those caring for civilians and with non-caregivers; and share insights on the potential consequences of caregiving on caregivers' health, their economic security, and their families' well-being. They also propose recommendations to strengthen caregiver support.

👉Our Central Command Post Launches Military/Veteran Caregiver Questionnaire Focused on TBI, Caregiving, and Intimate Partner Violence/Domestic Violence

Greensboro, North Carolina — 05/24/2026 — Our Central Command Post has launched the Military/Veteran Caregiver Questionnaire, a confidential survey designed to elevate the voices and lived experiences of Military and Veteran caregivers whose families have been impacted by blast-related Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), caregiving stress, and Intimate Partner Violence/Domestic Violence (IPV/DV).

The questionnaire invites caregivers, often known as “Hidden Heroes,” to share their experiences at their own comfort level. The information gathered will help inform a future advocacy booklet intended for elected officials, healthcare providers, policymakers, and the broader medical community.

The project aims to bring greater awareness to the long-term and often invisible effects of blast-related TBIs, including how these injuries may affect Veterans, caregivers, and families inside the home.

“This project exists to ensure Military and Veteran caregivers are seen, heard, and supported,” said Jeannette Davidson-Mayer, CEO/Cofounder of Our Central Command Post. “Caregivers carry stories that are deeply personal, often painful, and too often overlooked. By gathering these experiences with care and confidentiality, we hope to help build a stronger understanding of what families are living through and what support is urgently needed.”

The survey includes questions about caregiving, military service, TBI exposure, behavioral changes, outbursts, family impact, counseling, safety concerns, and caregiver experiences. Participants may skip any question they do not wish to answer by writing “not answering.”

All identifying and private information, including caregiver and Veteran names, will remain confidential unless disclosure is authorized through a signed Release of Information form.

The survey is part of a broader effort to advocate for increased research into blast-related TBIs, expanded funding for long-term care and support, and greater recognition of the essential role Military and Veteran caregivers play.
